Critical thinking should be an integral component of a traditional education. In Hong Kong, however, the tradition of rote-learning in order merely to pass exams and accumulate A grades has held sway.

High grades are a necessary condition for university entrance. But they are by no means a sufficient one. Critical thinking and exam success are complementary, not mutually-exclusive. Modern exams must be passed with the best grades possible to get admissions tutors to look past the exams.
